A Barbados television report said that Sam Lord's Castle was destroyed by fire late this afternoon after years of demolishing by neglect. Travelers may remember the southeast coast oceanfront property in better days as a Marriott resort. Its demise began five years ago when the Barbadian government acquired it, allowing Trinidadian insurance giant CLICOT to acquire it. When last I saw it, on-island for a Globe travel story, it was quietly demolishing by neglect. CLICOT-owned properties throughout the island -- and the Caribbean -- seem to follow a similar fate. Hard to see Barbados lose another.

Thanks for posting this, Patricia. Sam Lord's Castle was never my favorite, but it is very sad to hear that it has burned down. Sam Lord's Castle was a true Barbados classic.
So sorry to hear about that - that was one of the Barbados landmarks I was hoping to at least pass by on my own trip down there this coming month.
