Best destinations for a medical doctor?

Where do you consider the best destinations for a hard working medical doctor during his vacation of some four (4) weeks?

I can help -- before I came to Tripatini, I used to be the editor of a travel magazine for physicians. Our readers loved exploring other cultures, and viewing wildlife was also very popular. And at the end of the day, they wanted good food and good lodgings. But how good (expensive) should those lodgings be, etc.?

Let me ask you a few questions:

1. Will this trip be a heritage trip for someone whose ancestors came from West Africa?
2. Can you tell me how physically active this doctor is, and what city and state he or she is from? That might help a little, too.
3. And this will help even more: Can you tell me what the doctor's specialty is?

The reason I ask about specialty is that physicians' incomes in the United States vary widely. If the doctor is, say, a plastic surgeon, that doctor probably earns two or three (or more) times what an internist or pediatrician is earning. If the doctor is a plastic surgeon in Manhattan or Los Angeles, this is especially true. Meanwhile, many internists and other primary care physicians resent it when other people assume they're wealthy -- whether those other people are neighbors or relatives or tour operators.

One thing I would add to Jess's comment is that he might not be a he. About 50% of med school graduates in recent years have been women.

Hi Ed, How are you today? your family and work? These are what we ask a hard working man like you here in Nigeria. Please take good care of yourself. Now

They all work in a university teaching hospital in Ilorin - Nigeria. They just told me think for us we will like to have a vacation soonest and want to use it for tourism and refreshing our brains. They prefer anywhere but not African nations. One of them is a plastic surgeon and want to go with his whole family of five. The other is a consultant in children ward and specilized in child birth (I guess you understand). The last one that is just building up interest is a dentist, all in the same teaching hospital. Oh! I thought they were Americans going to Nigeria, so I had it completely backwards.

I'd be tempted to recommend Walt Disney World in Miami for the family of five, but man, it's expensive, even for a plastic surgeon. Perhaps the family would like an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, the northeast coast of South America, or the Mexican coast of the Caribbean, where the kids will have plenty to do and the parents can get some time to themselves?   Then again, how tolerant are these children of long plane rides?  Another idea for the family would be to rent a house, perhaps with a swimming pool, in Spain or Italy or Greece. Then the kids have things to do, and sometimes the family could drive into town and see things, shop in the markets, etc. Another good family vacation in Europe (again, I think of Europe because of the flight times) would be a self-drive barge in France. LOTS of fun.  Finally, might they be interested in a tribal-run nature resort in Kenya? God knows, Kenya is a different world than Nigeria; the downside is, it's not a short flight.

 

As for the other two, how old are they?

India is a wonderful country to visit. With four weeks you can see much of the country, plus enjoy some downtime along some the famous beaches in the south or take a float on the backwaters of Kerala. In addition, you can also travel with ease from India to Sri Lanka, Nepal or Bhutan. No matter what you enjoy doing, India will most definitely be able to satisfy you.

As someone in the medical profession, you may want to take some time to explore the holistic end of wellness and include yoga, Ayurvedic treatments and meditation. 

The choices are endless.

I second Adrienne's suggestion; my brother, a retired doctor, spends a month or two there every winter.

 

For single or youngish married doctors, I'd also recommend Brazil, which is not a very long trip from Nigeria. Party towns? Miami (Florida), Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Paris, and perhaps Prague.
