Driving New York till California in august suggestions?

Hi I am from the Spain's Basque country and this august I have vacations of four weeks in total. My dream is to drive in the car from New York City till California but I never done this and I need help!!! There is me, my girlfriend and her mother (¡¡!!) and she is difficult woman so I have to plan this perfect trip and not have problems.

Five days in the big Appel is enough? And how long time it takes to drive to L.A.? We should go by the route of the North, through Chicago and Jellowstone park and then Las Vegas? Or is more interesting to go by the south to see Washington and Texas and the Grand Canon and all that?

Any recommendations, I thank you, I am planning the trip now and I dont know if I do this trip again, so now has to be perfect!

Also hotels, not expensive but nice?
