Hi, I actually just went to Hanoi last year at around the same time. I stayed at the Hanoi Hilton Opera house because it is within walking distance of the Hoan Kim lake area and the Old Quarter. It is a great hotel and conveniently located with many shops, markets, and coffee shops within walking distance. The other option is to stay in the more touristy West Lake area where there are a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels in the newer part of the city. Make time to visit the Dong Xuan market area, walk around Hoan Kim lake at night, visit the water puppet theater, wander around in the Old Quarter and take a cyclo-ride through the city. Two days in Hanoi should be enough time before heading out to Ha long Bay. Hope this helps!
Hi Kevin,
I'm a Hanoi resident. Here's my suggestions:
Dec 29: Arrival. Chill out.
Dec 30: Trip to Halong Bay - Overnight onboard a traditional junk.
Dec 31: Return to Hanoi, enjoy the new year night.
Jan 1: Enjoy Hanoi.
Jan 2: Another day in Hanoi for leirsure (up to you!)
Jan 3: Perhaps a day trip to one or two traditional villages (Tho Ha village, bat Trang Village, Duong Lam Village). Night train to Hue.

About the hotels and Ha Long Bay cruises, please make it clearer in terms of budget, level of service and styles of hotel you would like to use then I can give you more suggestions.

Or, perhaps let my http://www.indochinapioneer.com be at your service?
Hi Martin,

You can see this tour at http://www.365travelvietnam.com/package-tours/vietnam-tours/best-se...

However, when you say you will travel to the south by train, I think it would be a great experience but rough actually. Think about it. You had better fly.

Why dont you have a look at this articles before hand?

It's a article about Halong bay, Cruise advice

Good luck
