"Cairo Time" is a good indie with three main characters: a woman, a man, and the city of Cairo. Saw it in L.A. at the Laguna Niguel Theatre, and now, at 7:20 A.M. Pacific Time, I'm drinking black coffee and looking at the photos on Tripatini's Cairo blog ( http://www.tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/cairo-egypt ), which makes think about the movie.

"The American" is the latest Hollywood movie set in Italy. Just saw it last night with a couple of friends, and I loved the picturesque scenery and cinematography in the Abruzzo (misty panoramas, as well as the twisty lanes and passageways of the mountain town of Castel del Monte which came across incredibly atmospheric, especially at night). Too bad the story itself is formulaic and turgid -- the pacing so glacial as to put me half to sleep. A paid assassin who develops a conscience, a hooker with a heart of gold (and suspiciously excellent English for a small-town prostie) -- I mean, please. It reminded me how much better I likes another flick I saw a couple of years ago -- also about killers for hire and with an atmospheric Euro local, "In Bruges." And what's with that craggy, nosy old priest? I remember thinking when he first showed up and started badgering the George Clooney character -- "Jeez, isn't this dude a little long in the tooth for him?" (Oh, c'mon, don't roll yer eyes -- I've known Italian priests personally!)

Just saw the much-anticipated movie version of Eat Pray Love. And, well -- I loved most of the scenery.

OK, I guess I should say this kind of thing just ain't my cuppa. It's an unlikely escapist fantasy filled with pretty banal platitudes. And Julia Roberts (aka Those Lips! Those Teeth!) is not my fave, either. But the flick sure made me nostalgic for Rome and yearning for Bali (I can't quite say the same for India, since after an initial careen through chaos most of the action in Calcutta takes place in a walled compound).

I'm a guy, though, and so probably the wrong person to opine on all of this. Any thoughts from the ladies?

So what's wrong with sappy? I'm a grown man, and I admit, I got a little misty during Letter to Juliet. And it was a spectacular showcase for Verona. It's actually one of my favorite cities in Italy. Re: the long long trailer, I love Lucy!! She can do no wrong. And that was one of the funniest travel movies ever.

Thanks, Dave, I'm going to try to get the long long trailer on netflix! The other David, re Letter to Juliet, I saw it when it came out and you're right, the cinematorgaphy is great and so is verona but WHAT A SAPPY MOVIE!! My date loved it, my mom loved it, i think every chick on the planet loved it but come on!!!

One of my favorite movies, John Kipper! That's THE LONG LONG TRAILER, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz. You're right, the whole thing with the rocks was hilarious!!! Here's another funny scene:
