Freelance writer, poet, author and educator Jen Karetnick works as the dining critic for MIAMI Magazine from the Modern Luxury Group; “Neighborhood Correspondent” columnist for Biscayne Times; and the Creative Writing Director for grades 6-12 at Miami Arts Charter School.
From 1992 until 2004, she was the restaurant critic and “Dish” and “Side Dish” columnist for the metropolitan weeklies Miami New Times and New Times Broward/Palm Beach (Village Voice Media) and from 2001 until December, 2009, she worked as the features editor for Wine News. In 2007-8, she was the Arts and Culture Expert for VisitFlorida.com, where she blogged, made videos and posted articles about the literary, music and arts scene in the state of Florida. She has also held these positions for the following defunct publications: dining editor for SoFlorida; dining editor for regional sister publications Las Olas Magazine and Lincoln Road Magazine; “Aphrodisia” columnist for Citizen Culture magazine; and “Substance Over Style” columnist for Rescue magazine. She has also blogged for herself on her site “Kitsch’n.”

The author of Around Miami with Kids (Random House, 2000) and chapters for Fodor's and Mobil Travel guidebooks, Jen is editor of Hungry? Thirsty? Miami (Glove Box Guides, 2007). She is co-author of Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow (HarperCollins, 2005) and Born-Again Vintage: 25 Ways to Deconstruct, Reinvent and Recycle Your Wardrobe (Potter Craft, December 2008) with designer Bridgett Artise. Her next book, Romancing the Mango: Recipes for the Obsessed, will be released from University Press of Florida in fall, 2013.
Jen holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in fiction from University of Miami. She has placed poems in journals including Barrow Street, Black River Review, Carpe Articulum, The Greensboro Review, Gulf Stream Magazine, The Nebraska Review, North American Review, River Styx, The Spoon River Poetry Review, Sou'wester and Valparaiso Poetry Review. She was awarded a 2005 Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg prize for a lyric poem and was a finalist for the Patricia Dobler, Earth Vision and Consequence prizes in 2009; a finalist for the River Styx Prize for 2010; and a finalist for The New Guard Review Knightsville Prize and the University of New Orleans Study Abroad Prize in 2011. She won the 2011 Piccolo in Your Pocket competition, sponsored by the Alaska Flute Studies Center, for a poem about flutes and/or piccolos. Jen is the author of Necessary Salt (Pudding House Publications, 2007) and Bud Break at Mango House (Portlandia Press, 2008), which won the press’s bi-annual chapbook competition. Her third collection, Eve and After, was a finalist in Southern Hum Press’s 2007 Women of Words chapbook competition. She will begin her doctoral studies in expressive arts therapy in Switzerland at the European Graduate School in summer, 2012.
Jen has won top honors from the North American Travel Journalists Association, Association of Food Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists (including a Green Eyeshade Award for criticism), and was also honored with prizes in the Greenbrier Scholarship Competition and the Missouri School of Journalism. She is a member of the Poetry Society of America, Association of Writers and Writing Programs, and Les Dames d'Escoffier. She lives in Miami Shores on the last remaining acre of a historic mango plantation with her husband (a neurologist with whom she co-authors articles), their 2 children, 3 dogs, 4 cats and 15 mango trees, and in her spare time plays flute with a quartet.
