10 must-visit places in Pondicherry

Pondicherry, a former French colony has grown to become one of the top tourist attractions in India. Till 1954, Pondicherry was a French colony and over all these years, it has still retained the architecture of that time with the colonial buildings, churches and the systematic town planning. Although a small town, it houses multitude of attractions that allure tourists from Indian as well as foreign origin. Here's a list of 10 must-visit places in Pondicherry.

1. Sri Aurobindo Ashram: Sir Aurobindo Ghosh started with a spiritual community in 1926, and ever since then the ashram is one of the premier destinations for tourists and spiritual seekers. There's library, offices, art gallery, printing press, playground, farms, bakery, guest houses and many more establishments within the ashram premises.

2. Immaculate Conception Cathedral: This church is 300 years old, and is the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. It is commonly known as 'Samba Kovil' by the locals, and holds a feast on every 8th of December. The place is of high importance among the tourists and locals, and is a must-visit.

3. Promenade Beach: Promenade is one of the prime beaches in the town. People come here early in the morning or late in the evening for a stroll in the calm and quiet setting. The Promenade is designed in a French style and has boulevards, swaying palm trees, and various statues and landmarks set up across the walkway.

4. Auroville: This strategically planned, experimental township is located 8 kilometers from Pondicherry and is a popular place of interest in the town. The idea behind the establishment of Auroville was to make people from different caste, colour and nationalities live together. Also, there are many hotels at Auroville in Pondicherry, where one one stay and enjoy themselves in the township.

5. Pondicherry Beach: For all the beach lovers out there, Pondicherry Beach is where they should be right now. With tree houses located on the backwaters to the cruise ride and a wide range of activities, the beach offers it all. Also, onecan get cheap accommodations at the hotels at Beach Road in Pondicherry (an added advantage).

6. Botanical Garden: This is another example of French influence in the town. The Botanical Garden features different species of flora, gravel lined paths, trees and a number of fountains. People come here with their families and friends for picnic amidst beautiful flowers, trees and grass.
