Ilha dos Frades is an island named after a pair Franciscan friars, the sole survivors of a nearby shipwreck. A mere six kilometers long, this island shaped like a star with fifteen tips has all the ingredients of a perfect tropical paradise. Ilha dos Frades (Island of the Friars) is a compound of beaches with white sand, fresh water lakes, small waterfalls of surprising beauty, hills providing a spectacular view of the bay and a lush forest combining the palm trees you would normally find at this latitude and trees typically found along Brazil’s Atlantic coast.
The most famous beach on Ilha dos Frades is Ponta de Nossa Senhora, on the northern part of the island. White sand and crystal-clear water combine perfectly well with the comfort provided by the parasols distributed along the beach and the showers for cooling off. The bars serve ice cold beer and plenty of fresh fish and seafood—luxury for your palate!
Now if you prefer a calm and more secluded beach we recommend Paranama, surrounded by exuberant flora and many streams and small waterfalls, with a spectacular natural swimming hole when the tide is low. Viração is the most deserted beach, the wildest one you can find on the island. It is surrounded by plenty of rocky formations and coconut trees, and traces of human presence are nowhere to be found.
If you get around to it you should visit the church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, in the southern part of the island. It is one of the most elegant and picturesque churches of Baia and is of exceptional architectural value. The ruins of the church of Nossa Senhora do Guadalupe, atop the namesake hill, are an ideal vantage point for indulging in the beauty of the island.
