In Cuba's capital these days, the dining scene has improved and evolved immeasurably in recent years. Here's just a quick sampling of some of the best in the city these days, both state-owned and privately owned:

Al Medina

Once upon a time, Cuba had significant Arab immigration, and this Lebanese eatery in a restored colonial-era school in Old Havana provides good, exotic fare (as a change of pace from the ubiquitous Cuban) amid exotic decor. Calle Oficios 12 between Obispo and Obrapía.

La Bodeguita del Medio

Touristy, yes, but a must. Opened in 1942 just off Old Havana's Cathedral Square, the home of Earnest Hemingway's mojito remains one of the most atmospheric restaurants in town, with its graffitti-covered walls and photos of famous visitors (top). The food is straightforward, tasty Cuban fare. Calle Empedrado between San Ignacio and Mercaderes.

La Mina

Another longtime classic with an excellent location, on the corner of the Old Havana's Plaza de Armas, it offers visitors a large menu of Cuban classics such as tamales and black beans with white rice. And don't forget a sinfully sweet dessert with a cup of strong Cuban coffee! Calle Obispo 109.

El Patio

Good Cuban/international fare with a cinematic front-row seat in Old Havana's Cathedral Square, located in an 18th-century building with lovely balonies and traditional multicolor windows. It amazes with its beautiful balconies on the upper floor, as well as its colorful windows.

Prado No 12

Both the name and the address, this restaurant at the intersection of Paseo del Prado and Malecón specialises in grilled meats, and the portions of shrimp are large and tasty, too. Both the owner and the staff are very pleasant and provide good service by Havana standards. One unique selling point: during the afternoon you can take tai chi classes sponsored by the Chinese embassy!

El Rincón de Elegguá

A great example of a paladar (private restaurant) serves up a good variety of chicken, pork and fish dishes. Decor is simple but service is good - and even though it's a bit pricier thanks in part to its prime Old Havana location, it's well worth it. Calle Aguacate 257 between Obispo and Obrapia.

Those of you who have been, what are your own favourites?

The IBEROSTAR Parque Central, which belongs to IBEROSTAR Hotels & Resorts group, is a 5-star hotel located right in the heart of Havana. This luxury hotel boasts spectacular views over Havana, which can be seen from the rooms and the spa, among other areas. The IBEROSTAR Parque Central is considered the besthotel in Havana.”
