Snow-capped peaks, crisp fresh air, a nice beverage and green meadows – these are probably images we like to conjure as we pound away on a keyboard, confined in our cubicles while the mercury rises outside. Luckily for our Dilliwales, the Himalayan foothills are not so far away and an escapade into the mountains can be planned at any time. Here are some of the top hill destinations near the capital city.

Shimla

What has not yet been chronicled about Shimla, the erstwhile summer capital of the Raj? Grand colonial architecture, and quaint streets and churches aside, Shimla is also blessed with a magnificent location spread across seven hills. Hire a Delhi to Shimla taxi and enjoy a much needed break from your daily grind. The town is surrounded by forests of pine and oak and is a great stage for day treks. Walk around the old markets, visit landmarks like the Ridge and Christ Church and catch panoramic views from the summit of Jakhu Hill.

Nainital

A charming resort town that blossoms around a serene lake, Nainital is one of the popular getaways in Uttarakhand state. With temperatures that rarely exceed the mid-twenties, Nainital offers respite to any weary traveler and is a joy to experience in the summer and monsoon months. The town is a perfect base for hikes around the countryside and the old architecture and mountainous scenery provides a quintessential hill retreat.

Manali

India’s own Bohemian paradise, Manali is where many Himalayan adventures start. The Himachli town has carved its own niche as a getaway for young backpackers from all over the country and the world. Unwind in one of the many cafes that dot the town or embark on walks to admire the picture perfect Himalayan vistas. Find a Delhi to Manali car rental and enjoy a scenic drive along winding mountain roads and deep valleys. A trip to the Rohtang Pass is always recommended.

Kasauli

A mix of history and mountains cape greets those who visit Kasauli, another famed hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Enjoy views of the valleys beyond including the Sutlej River from Monkey Point, the highest point in Kasauli. There are quite a few more iconic spots of this very picturesque town that one should visit. The Sunset Point is self-explanatory and Kasauli also has its own Mall Road, a place where you can do some shopping. The Baptist Church is a fine example of British era architecture.

Solan

Solan is around 1600 meters above sea level and is home to one of the world’s highest railway stations, a stop for the famous Kalka-Shimla train. The town enjoys pleasant weather and is enveloped by mist during the monsoons. Some of the places to visit in Solan include Shoolini Devi Temple and Bon Monastery along with many old buildings that have been preserved from the British era.

Mussoorie

Nestled in the hills of Garhwal, Mussoorie is like a modern day Shangri-La popular with travelers from all over India. Some of the attractions here include the gushing Kempty Falls, at its most resplendent during the monsoon and the cable car which offers a thrilling way of getting the bird’s eye view of the town.

The Himalayan foothills and their splendor and charm await you. A hill station vacation is one that will create great memories that will last a lifetime. The changing landscapes as you rise from dusty plains into fog swept valleys create a sense of excitement and the way is always full of interesting detours and scenic spots. A holiday beckons. Get packing. Choose a top car rental in Delhi and enjoy a road trip with friends and loved ones.
