For Memorial Day Weekend our son invited us to Bakersfield, CA. Normally when we think of Bakersfield we think of a small city North of Los Angeles, CA, just past the Grapevine. What was once a small little town of honky tonk bars, race cars and working farmers is now a sprawling city boasting of small communities where folks are neighborly.
Surprisingly enough good food and local shopping is easy to find.Major hotel chains offering comfortable accommodations are located just off the 99 Highway. Our visit took us to Sandy Flats. Our original quest was for the Remington Hot Springs which was just past our destination. After a long windy road, we ended up at Sandy Flat Campground. The campground is bit deceiving, as it looks like a place where campers park their trailers. The campground is actually along the Kern River with shallow waters up to six feet for swimming. Several recreational opportunities for visitors include fishing, hiking and river rafting.
Part of the Sequoia National Forest, Sandy Flat is an off the beaten path weekend excursion for an affordable getaway retreat. The area is uncrowded. A $10 daily use fee is collected upon entering the campground. Nearby attractions are the Hobo Fishing trail and the Hot Springs. Sandy Flat is gem for quiet simple relaxation.
