The San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration, usually known as San Francisco Pride, is dedicated to education, to the commemoration of LGBT heritage and to the celebration of LGBT culture and liberation. The parade and festival are celebrated every year, for the past 41 years, in the city of San Francisco which has a rich and lengthy history of gay rights. The celebrations take place the last weekend of June where hundreds of exhibitors and parade contingents get together in to celebrate LGBT pride in, what is considered, one of the largest Gay Pride celebrations in the United States. [cquote]San Francisco Pride has been said to be "one of the last remaining pride events that can truly be called a rite of passage."[/cquote]
The theme for the 42nd San Francisco Pride is Global Equality. The theme was proposed by Bishop Senyonjo who has been visiting California to raise awareness of the plight of LGBT Ugandans and others in the 76 countries which currently criminalize LGBT people, together with Rev. Canon Albert Ogle of San Diego.
A world leader in the Pride movement, SF Pride is also a grant-giving organization through our Community Partners Program. Since 1997, SF Pride has granted nearly $2 million dollars from proceeds of the Pride Celebration and Parade to local non-profit LGBT organizations and those organizations working on issues related to HIV/AIDS, cancer, homelessness, and animal welfare. Visitors are invited to donate as much as they can during the celebrations, however, a $5 donation is required at the gates. The celebration takes place in Civic Center Plaza in downtown San Francisco. The Parade, which takes place the Sunday morning of the event, starts off from Beale Street along Market and ends at Market and 8th St. in downtown San Francisco.Ready to have fun in one of the largest Gay Pride Celebrations?
