If you have a limited time for trekking but still want to see some of the Himalayas here are what we think are the 5 best short treks in Nepal. Note: Some of our itineraries on the website for these treks are longer as they include extra days in either Kathmandu or Pokhara. The times given here are the minimum requirements. Please ask us for more details

1) Poon Hill Trek :

Starting Point: Pokhara and one hour taxi to Nayapul.
Minimum Day Required: 4 or 5
This trek starts from Pokhara and if you want to see some of Nepal’s big peaks up close it’s the best option for a short trek. The view from Poon Hill (3210m/10531ft) takes in Annapurna South, Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. The first few days the trail makes a steady climb between the small Sherpa villages. The second night can be spent in Tadapani which offers great views of Annapurna II, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare which is also known as “Fish Tail.” If you bring some swimwear you can make the short hike down to the river to enjoy the hot springs in Tadapani. It’s another days climb from Tadapani to Ghorepani from where the following morning you hike to Poon Hill to catch the sunrise on the Himalayas. After taking in the views it’s time to head back to Ghorepani and start the return trek.

2) Langtang Trek:

Starting Point: Kathmandu and six hour drive to Syabrubesi
Minimum Day Required: 7 Days
This is a great trek for those starting from Kathmandu and can be accomplished in less than a week. It’s a 6 hour drive to the remote hill station of Syabrubesi from where the trek begins. The trek takes you up the beautiful canyon of the Langtang Khola. While you won’t see any 8000m peaks Langtang Lirung (7227m), the worlds 99th tallest peak, is impressive enough. Upon reaching the upper valley make sure to make a morning hike to Kyanjin Ri (4773m / 15655 ft) for a beautiful view of the peaks of Langtang Himal and the surrounding glaciers and ice falls.

3) Annapurna Base Camp:

Starting Point: Pokhara and one hour taxi to Nayapul.
Minimum Day Required: 8
The Annapurna Base Camp is the longest of the short treks listed here but it is possible to make it in as little as 7 or 8 days. It’s a spectacular hike up the canyon of the Modi Khola with fantastic views of Machapuchare which has been coined the “Matterhorn of Asia.” Reaching the Annapurna Sanctuary you are virtually encircled by a ring of mountains. The south face ofAnnapurna I (8091m) the tallest of the peaks in the Sanctuary towers over base camp providing a more then impressive backdrop. Make sure to get a soak in the hot springs at Tadapani on the way back down.

4) Everest View Trek

Starting Point: Kathmandu and 45 min flight to Lukla
Minimum Day Required: 5 Days
If you don’t have the time to make the complete trek to Everest Base Camp this might be the next best thing. The highlight of the trek is the views of Everest and Ama Dablam from just above Namche Bazaar. The trek starts with a short exciting flight to the small mountain airstrip at Lukla from where you will trek to Phakding. The next day is a beautiful day of trekking up the canyon of the Dudh Kosi which involves crossing several suspension bridges before you make the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. The next day is spent hiking up to the Everest View Hotel to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest in the distance and by now you will wish you were making the complete trek to Everest Base Camp. After spending a day in Namche you return to Lukla by the same route and fly back to Kathmandu.

5) Lakes of Gosainkunda

Starting Point: Kathmandu and six hour drive to Dhunche
Minimum Day required: 6 Days
The Lakes of Gosaikunda (4360m) are famous as a pilgrimage site for Hindus who flock to the site in August during Janai Purnima. The first few days are spent ascending through the forests before you reach treeline at Cholang Paty from where you get your first glimpse of the towering Langtang Himal and Annapurna in the far distance. Rest for the night at the tea houses of Lauribinayek and then get up early the following morning to hike up to the lakes. Return the following day back to Dhunche and Kathmandu.

All of these treks offer great tea house accommodation so you don’t need to bring a lot of gear. The number of days listed here is shorter then our standard itineraries so if you are pressed for time drop us an inquiry and let us help you figure out how to make the most of your trip.
