The religion of people living in Mustang is Buddhism and hence this place is enriched with traditional Buddhist Monasteries and Gumbas.

The Home Ministry of Nepal, announced Upper Mustang to be a restricted area in October 1991. There is a process to obtain a permkit from Department of Immigration to visit Upper Mustang. The process to obtain permission is qutie strict.
