Explore the forbidden Himalaya Kingdom of Upper Mustang with JRN Treks.
Trek to Upper Mustang will give you a completely different trekking experience than other trekking destinations in Nepal. Upper Mustang is known as the last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal. Mustang was prohibited for foreign tourists to enter until 1990. Still, this area is a restricted trekking region in Nepal and thus tourists will require a permit to get the green signal for trekking here. During this trek, you are going to explore an ancient Tibetan culture and traditions in the land of Nepal. The uniqueness of the treeless landscapes, thousands of years of old and historical Monasteries, Longest Mani wall, the beauty of pray flags on the passes; and the superb view of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and other Himalayan peaks. Besides the Upper Mustang part, if you have more days and want to explore at the same time, then you can continue with Annapurna Circuit Trek and Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

After we reach in Lo Manthang, we will have 2 more days to explore the region. On the first day, you’ll explore the historical, beautiful, and ancient Buddhist monasteries inside the Lo Manthang and on the second day, you’ll be headed to Chhoser to visit cave monasteries and other beautiful sights. If you wish and fortunately if we have enough time, we can go and visit the border of Tibet as well. Finally, we return via Ghar Gumba to reach in Ghami to follow the same trail back to Kathmandu.
The trekking season in Nepal is in spring and autumn whereas if you are thinking of trekking in Upper Mustang, the summer season is the best because the region is also known as the desert of Nepal and hence this part is not affected by the rain.
The rainy season in Nepal can also be good for trekking in Upper Mustang because of the low precipitation, however, it is not recommended. One may have to face several challenges during trekking in the rainy season. One of the most popular cultural show of Mustang, Tiji festival is celebrated in this season.
