Montreal activities/budget lodging suggestions

My family is planning a trip to Montreal this summer and would like to know about what to do there and where to stay. Like most families, we're on a budget. Any suggestions?

There are plenty of budget accommodations, but my markets are more high end so I'm at a loss to recommend one. Basically, Montreal is a major city, so if you have a favourite brand they'll have hotels/motels there. Ecolodge, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, etc.

Montreal is a great summer city because it has a European attitude to price - meaning they do do many things for families and children that are either free or low cost. The summer schedule is filled with festivals and celebrations. Check their what's on calendar. There's a massive jazz festival. There's a circus festival. There's Just For Laughs - which has a free outdoor component. There are all kinds of things geared to kids. There are biking and hiking trails, in the city centre and the mountain, in the city centre and you can go out to the river islands and have a fun day playing, exploring and picnicing. And since Montreal has the underground city, you can turn that into an adventure for the kids.
