In regards to recommendations, it depends on the budget you have in mind and how many days you plan to be in Jordan. You can see Petra in one day or you can spend 3-4 days visiting all the beautiful sites that Jordan has to offer.

I was in Petra earlier this month. In my humble opinion, you need a minimum of two visit to Petra to even begin to scratch the surface of this wonderful ancient site. A two day pass costs 55 Jordanian Dinars. Make sure you have good hiking boots if you want to climb the 850 odd steps to see the Monastery. 

You have not indicated what you budget is for this trip, and/or your daily budget for living+dining expenses. There are many backpackers in Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and other places who stretch their dollar/dinar as far as possible using public transportation. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience traveling on a shoe-string.

Is Jordan your only destination in this trip ? Or is it part of  larger travel plans which include many other countrues, and lasting months ?
