South Beach Miami Trip in October: ISO tips & suggestions

Is it a good time to go to South Beach Miami especially in 2nd week of October? Some friends of mine are planning to trip there. Can anyone give suggestion and tips about it?

Hi Finn! Yes, the second week of October is a good time and there's plenty to do in South Beach if they don't want to rent a car and go further afield. Can you give me more details as to the age group, budget, interests, length of trip and so on?

Hi Finn,

South Beach is perfect for that age group. There are tons of things to do ... the easiest of course being just going to the beach! The twenty somethings love the clubs and we can get into more detail about that. For live music, there's Jazzid, the Van Dyke Café and Fillmore Hall, which is owned by Live Nation and does concerts or comedians. Lincoln Road is a lovely pedestrian street with many shops, cafés (al fresco dining), lounges, bars and some of the best people watching on the island. Then there's Ocean Drive, which is quite the scene on weekends and evenings with dozens of outdoor cafés. Mango's is very touristy but a must if you've never experienced Latin music or dancing. Española Way is a popular historic street with a market on the weekends.

There are pool parties on Sunday at The Mondrian Hotel. One very popular hot spot is Nikki Beach, which serves a great brunch on Sundays and has sunbathing "beds" you can rent for the day. It's also a very popular club at night on the weekends as well as Plunge at the Gansevoort Hotel, which is a rooftop pool area with a spectacular view. If they want to go to a club, I suggest working with a trusted promoter and I can help hook them up with that.

There's a kayak outfitter as well for tours on the bay, including a very fun full moon tour if they happen to come around that time of the month. As well, there are numerous snorkel and scuba shops on the island. In addition, if they're into a little more high brow culture, there's the Wolfsonian and Bass Museums, as well as artsy performances at the Colony Theater and of course the New World Symphony.

I also suggest the GPS-based tour offered by Miami Tour Company, which will give them a 3-hour overview of the city's best neighborhoods, which they can follow up with a tour to the Everglades. The local art deco society offers walking tours if they want to learn about the architecture.

If they decide to stick to Miami Beach, they will not need to rent a car, not even for the tour mentioned above, because there are pick up and drop off points in South Beach. I would suggest they find a hotel near Lincoln Road (south of 23rd street) or near/around Ocean Drive south of fifth street. Ocean Drive itself can be very loud, but then again, at that age, they may not care too much about sleeping. There is a 25 cent bus that loops around South Beach and runs until 1 am. Also there are cabs, though they can be pricey, depending on the time of the day. The other day I paid $10 just to go one mile. But you really don't need a car at all. Parking can be expensive.

The Met Hotel in the South of Fifth neighborhood has apartment suites that might be convenient for them if they want to share the hotel space and have a small kitchen facility.

If they want to stay very cheaply there is The Clay Hotel on Española Way, which is a hostel but offers individual rooms with private bathrooms.

Good time to have vacation in October but it’s much better to visit in December where weather is excellent to enjoy the vacations.
