Looking for things to do and a nice and/or interesting lunch place. Also, is there a place at DTW to leave luggage during a pop into town?  One catch: this will be on Easter Sunday, so I imagine some if not many museums and attractions may be closed?  I should have a total of around 4 hours free time, counting travel time to/from airport.  Any suggestions welcome, thanks!!

I'm not so sure on a holiday weekend with only a four hour layover I would want to leave the airport. Also, considering it would be Easter Sunday, I would agree major attractions even shopping malls would be closed. Once you leave the airport complex, get to center city or other place of interest, you'll wind up turning around to be back at the airport to get through security. Again, holiday weekend, I would expect the lines to be long and slow.

I would most likely make sure I have a great book, great comfy and wait it out.

What fun you'll have! I am not sure if any of these places will be open on Easter Sunday, so best to call and check. And, four hours is a really tiny space for getting out and about, and the airport is NOT next to downtown, so there will be some travel time.

If you love Greek food, head to the Pegasus restaurant in Greektown. YUM!

If you like to wander, go to Eastern Market and explore all of the things for sale at the market! Saturdays are best, though, and I am not sure they will be open on Sundays. Around Eastern Market, you can go to R. Hirt for amazing cheese, and Rocky Peanut for a plethora of delicious snacks!

Downtown, I'd recommend the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) - amazing.

Pure Michigan has a list of museums here:

But really, with only four hours, i'd echo adrienne and say stay put. It's much better than missing your flight!

Yes, dont get out of the airport.

Not a safe city unless you know  how  to get around, in which case it is a nice place.

Best to stay inside the terminal and  read a book.

Cheers

Thanks folks.  Just to clarify, the actual free time available is 4 hours, of a total layover of 6 hours. Think that makes any difference??

Sure, yes.Are you traveling  from domestic  flight to domestic flight?  be aware  that nowaday  with  security restrictions etc.   the TSA may make it difficult to get out and get back in. Confirm it wiht the  airline  agent.  Museums etc... should  be open as Easter is not a National Holiday.

Take a cab to the Ford museum, quite nice.

Don't believe there are luggage lockers or storage at DTW any longer. Do you have an airline club membership? Or you might check with the Westin Hotel in the MacNamara Terminal; perhaps you could leave bags with the bell stand...

I agree that downtown Detroit will be very quiet on Easter Sunday.

Suggest heading to the Detroit Institute of Arts, on Woodward in the Cultural Center a couple of miles north of the downtown area---don't miss the Diego Rivera Detroit Industry murals. The DIA will be open on Sunday. (www.dia.org)

The Henry Ford Museum is much closer to the airport and definitely worth a trip; do the indoor museum if the weather is iffy and the outdoor Greenfield Village if it's a nice day. (www.thehenryford.org)

Or head the other direction to eat at the legendary Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, and stroll around the home of U of M.

Thanks for all your suggestions! If anyone's interested, here's the piece that resulted: http://www.tripatini.com/profiles/blogs/sightseeing-in-detroit.
