Probably, for families, it's Colonial Williamsburg, wouldn't you say?

I agree with David; that's gotta be #1 with families. Other major attractions include Luray Caverns and Shenandoah National Park, which is gorgeous regardless of whether you drive on Skyline Drive or hike on the trail that snakes alongside it. Years ago I had my first unsupervised encounter with a black bear in Shenandoah; we both survived, thank you. 

 

This is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, so you should also include Civil War sites like Richmond (capital of the Confederacy), Manassas (site of the two battles of Bull Run), and Antietam, site of the single bloodiest day of fighting in the Civil War. There are other battlefields, too, some of which you can tour by bicycle and/or Segway. You can tour Antietam on an authentic, handmade buckboard, the same kind of horse-drawn vehicle that hundreds of Virginians used after the battle to retrieve bodies of fallen soldiers.

You also have Mt Vernon (home of George Washington) and Monticello (home of Thomas Jefferson)

You should check out the Tomb of the Unknowns and Arlington National Cemetery, they are well know and Virginia and are a national landmark. You also should go to Virginia Beach and enjoy the beach atmosphere, the Sandbridge beach is beautiful and  the Boardwalk is a great attraction as well.
