Panch Pokhari offers a chance to get off the beaten track in the beautiful Langtang National Park. This is an undeveloped trekking area where you can camp or arrange the occasional home stay. Panch Pokhari literally translates as ‘five lakes’ and the trek follows a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage journey to the lakes at 4050m. This is a fantastic trek where you ascend through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests with magnificent views of the Jugal Himal at sunrise.

The Tamang and Sherpa people of this region make their livelihood from woodcutting and herding cows and buffalo. You pass many of their summer pasture shelters on the way. This is also Red Panda country, they are very shy creatures but if you are lucky you may see their footprints on the trail.

When you reach the holy lakes there is a shrine to Shiva and a pile of tridents. In the June/July full moon thousands of Nepalese come to worship here bathing in the sacred waters and making offerings to the gods.

You then descend through the forests where you can see handmade paper drying in the sun. You then reach the Indrawati valley where you can relax and swim in the refreshing mountain rivers.

The trek finishes at an idyll camp by the river in Melamchi where you take take a vehicle back to Kathmandu.www.nepaleverestguide.com
