The Volvo Car Open: Catching Women’s Tennis in Action

Photos and coverage by Will Davis

One of the things I like the most about attending the Volvo Car Open tennis tournament on Charleston's Daniel Island is watching the players as they leave the court after their games and the kids gather around for autographs of balls, hats, books, and…

When I Think of Aiken, South Carolina

The Aiken County Courthouse in August 2007

On a recent trip to Aiken, South Carolina (just over an hour south of state capital Columbia and a half hour from Augusta, Georgia), I received as a gift a book titled When I think of Aiken, written by Michael Gibbons and illustrated by Betsy Wilson-Mahoney, two long-time residents of Aiken who shared in words and drawings their memories of growing up and living much of their lives in this beautiful southern charmer of a city.

The book…

The Historic Penn Center of South Carolina's Gullah Islands

There are hidden treasures in and around Beaufort, South Carolina, and finding a gem or two perhaps not on the well worn areas, like the beaches, shopping and museums, is a treat.  I found…

Yorktown, Virginia's New American Revolution War Museum

The Sounds of Fifes & Drums

Driving along the beautiful Colonial National Parkway along the York River toward Yorktown, one can almost hear the sounds of fife and drums, regimental bands and the blistering sounds of a cannonade. Yorktown, the pivotal battle in Virginia which caused British General Cornwallis to surrender his army to combined American and French forces led by George…

Gratifying Greensboro, North Carolina

by Will A. Davis and Mary Gallagher

We have visited Greensboro, North Carolina a number of times, and each time I leave, I say "Gee, I really like that city". Of course, the next thought is usually self-interrogation:" Why is that?".  The answer is that Greensboro has just about everything, while at the same time not having too much. It's more than anything, I believe, a fun city. Start with the name - easy enough. The "Greens" comes from Nathaniel…

But besides the famous racetrack…

Greensboro, North Carolina - The Greening of the 'Gate City'

On one of our many south-to-north trips, we were able to break the “routine” of highway travel with a two day visit to Greensboro, NC. Here is the first report on that visit.

We often hear in our daily activities something about the word “green”. On a recent trip to Greensboro, North Carolina, this became even more relevant for me…

The Civil War: One Hundred Fifty Years Later

Sometimes we often think of 150 years as a long time and in most situations it is. Not in history though.  April 12, 2011 will  mark the 150-th anniversary of the start of the Civil War  (Or the War of Northern Agression, the War Between the States, whatever your prefernce might be.). With the shelling of Fort Sumter in the  harbor at Charleston , South Carolina, four long years of terrible carnage were to follow.
