We are at a loss as to what to do for this December - we have two teen boys (spoilt rotten) who would rather scrape fingernails down a chalkboard than spend a millisecond looking at museums or what they deem as ADULT boring stuff..!!.. We are looking for a slice of adventure - something different and exciting... Hot n spicy as opposed to bland and expected.. An err on the WILD side....

Some of our past adventures include:

Galapagos Islands
Peru
Australia
Europe
UK
Poland
Route 66 and the states
Africa
Norway (ice hotel)
New Zealand
Amazon
Panama

Any ideas to help me through this difficult time would be MOST gratefully received..

We have a family with teen boys heading to Costa Rica December 18 - 26. This is a trip designed for teens and older, with zip line, rafting, kayaking, hiking, surfing etc. We handle all of the logistics - you just show up and have fun.

Your biggest problem will be finding flights, in and out of SJO.

Or - how about Egypt? See pyramids and mummies (minimal museum!) yes, but also the chance to climb to the top of Mt Sinai and swim in the Red Sea

Belize?

Interested? Call me at 800-262-6255, my name is Moo Bishop
Actually - Costa Rica sounds very good - We can drive there from Panama...!!

Please send me details........ thewalkers@rocketmail.com

perfect ;)
Have you thought about Patagonia? Hiking, wildlife, glaciers, vast open spaces? Our company, Lost World Adventures, www.lostworld.com specializes in travel to South America. We have a lot of families such as yours, with teenagers, travellng to Patagonia.

Alternatively, consider Costa Rica: there is more to keep a teenager active there than any place else I can think

Feel free to contact me if you are interested at 800-999-0558.
Patagonia wow...... At this point I am VERY open to suggestions...!!

You mentioned Galapagos, but not Ecuador. I guide groups of teens to South America and I agree that traveling shouldn't require standing around in stuffy museums and buildings. (although Mom & Dad and MAYBE the boys, might enjoy Guayasamin museum in Quito)

There may still be time to organize a trip to Ecuador with overnights in a lodge near Cotopaxi Volcano. Mom & Dad could have private room, boys could try the dorms. Then head up to Mindo area for some serious jungle traipsing to see wild birds and top it off with a day long excursion to the top of a volcano.

Depending on age of boys, could shoot for the summit of Cotopaxi, (19,000 ft) which does not require technical training or gear, just a good guide to climb the glacier. Or settle for a breathtaking visit to the climbers hut around 15,000 ft above sea level.

Rent a car and drive south of Quito and stay in a comfy eco-lodge where a local guide can be hired for the day to take the boys up to the 14,000 ft top of Quilatoa Crater Lake, while Mom & Dad enjoy the hand-built hot tub & sauna.

Good Luck,

Jacquie,

Yes, we did Ecuador but not the things you mentioned - all sound very exciting but maybe a trip for the boys alone without parents traipsing along might be a better idea for this one - more info on the these exciting groups you guide would be MOST welcome..

kindest regards

Jackie

Looking at your list, I don't see anything in Asia! Thailand and Cambodia are incredible for teenagers (and people of all ages). There are tons of opportunities for adventure an fun. Ziplines, kayaking (a personal favorite is an escorted night-time kayak trip "under the stars"), trekking through hilltribe villages, incredible diving and snorkeling, elephants, tigers, and climbing to the top of thousand-year-old temples, rock climbing, .... The list goes on. The Thai people are wonderful and welcoming, the food is incredible (and your boys might even like the fried bugs!). Contact me if you'd like more information. Thanks!
I would suggest my Vietnam and Cambodia. A few days trekking in Sapa with stunning landscape and friendly tribal people, some days kayaking over Halong Bay, a day cycling around Hue or Hoi An, Swimming in China beach, discovering Mekong Delta, a water park in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city) and getting charmed by the Angkor Wat, all that in a fantastic tour for any age! And of course, kids LOVE it!.

It really depends on the timing; most of our courses for are closed from the 14th of December. We offer Birding with Bruce Lawson in a private concession in Kruger National Park – On foot in Big 5 area, staying in an unfenced camp (Old style basic camp in the wilderness)
I have better alternatives in for them during other holidays – Botswana: Scorpion and Spider courses, Survival courses and the Key to Trees.
We also offer a EcoQuest course in Botswana (7 days experiencing Safari Guide basics)
Let me know if these options interest you
