> My daughter and I are taking a cruise out of Puerto Rico in March. When we return to San Juan, I'd like to spend 2 nights in the city in order to see the historical sites. We are looking for an affordable and safe hotel in which to stay where we can get to easily from the port as well as get to the airport. And, we'd like to take a tour of San Juan. Any suggestions?

Most beautiful place to stay in San Juan, in my book, is the Gallery Inn. It's several colonial-era townhouses interconnected by the owner, an artist who has lived there since 1961. Words won't do it justice, so you should look at the images on their site: http://www.thegalleryinn.com/ . Not sure if it's in your budget range, as " affordable" means different things to different people. But even if it's a bit of a splurge, I'd do it, especially if it's just two nights. It's right in Old San Juan, so you can go for a stroll any time in one of the most beautiful colonial towns in the Americas.

There is, however, no beach, so if you're looking to stay right on the beach, you should look in Condado or Ocean Park, both of which are closer to the airport. These areas, though, are pretty much suburban sprawl and in my view you might as well be in Pompano Beach. To me, Puerto Rico is about the colonial culture, so I prefer to stay in the old town.

Good luck, Nancy!
Thank you Max. It looks like a great place....but I do not consider $270/night as affordable! I would lvoe to stay there for the summer price, but March is their high season. Thats so much for the suggestion, Will file it away for, perhaps, another time. The beach would not be an issue since we are just coming back from a cruise and are looking for a place to stay to see San Juan for a few days before flying back to New England!

Hi I.m Juan from Amador Island Tours. Remeber we are an island so all distances are short. There area 3 main tourism areas in Metro area Old San Juan ( Hotels ($$$), night clubs, restaurants, stores not best prices),Condado Hotels, night clubs not many stores ( forget about Shopping) only one Beach "Playita del Condado) and Isla Verde Next to airport Night Clubs, Hotels and plenty of beaches.Depending on your Budget in Old San Juan ;Old San Juan Sheraton In Condado Area
Holiday Inn Express and Quality In El Portal these 2 includes continental breakfast and in Isla Verde Howard and Jonhson.
Do not consider Distances ALL are very close to pier and airport ..
Tours Old San Juan is a Must also Ponce beatfull city but for beaches Guanica Caña Gorda (2 hour away SW from San Juan or 7 Seas 1 :25 away fron San Juan Eastward
We are NOT looking for beaches. I am looking to an inexpensive clean hotel/inn (less then $175/night) which is in an area safe for two women to stay in. We are interested in seeing what can be seen on a Sunday afternoon and all day Monday before we take off on Tuesday. What do you consider "very close" to pier and airport? Both of them are in different locations and do not look close by at all.
Any hotel In Old San Juan is about 30 minutes away from Airpot and 20/30 minutes to Piers
Any Hotel in Condado area is about25 minutes from airport and 15 minutes from pier
Any Hotel in Isla Verde isd nest to the airport and 20/30 minute to Piers

Actually if cruise by carnival docking piers are at Old San juan; Royal Caribbean is in Condado area
Holiday Inn Express,Quality Inn El Portal,Howard and jonhson Isla Verde

Have fun

Our cruise has been booked....months ago. Now we are looking for a hotel in a safe location for two women for two nights, Sunday and Monday, March 13th-14th, 2011. I did not get any attachments from you. I am not on hotmail, nor do I skype. I am looking for a reasonable hotel (less the $175/night) in a safe area somewhere close/near/between the pier and the airport which is easily accessible for us. I prefer one from which we can take tours and/or get a bus/taxi to a location where we can pick up a tour.
From the sites you have attached, I see you have the wrong dates.....we want Sunday night, March 13th and Tuesday night, March 14. In addition, the prices appear to be way too cheap. In the USA we have a saying, if it appears to be too good to be true, it probably is.
