Where would you put up a jetlagged couple coming from India who want a quiet room where they can sleep odd hours, easy access to major subway lines, and a nightly tab of no more than $200?

Good luck with that one! However there is The Franklin Hotel (upper east side) near the museums - 1 block from the no 6 train; The Shoreham Hotel (near the B,D,N,R,Q,E,F and if they walk to Columbus circle about 4 blocks 1,2,9).

Just remembered the Room Mate Grace (near Times Sq - so may be a bit loud on the outside, but I hear the rooms are nice.  WiFi spotty however, but there is a Starbucks near by) their rates are around $170

I personally think the first two are a better bargain...buy 2 get one day free...so it might balance out depending on how long they are staying.

That's all I can think of before massive amounts of coffee.  Good luck!!

Send them to the NYMA, the new name for the newly renovated New York Manhattan Hotel, 6 West 32nd street.  Two blocks from Herald Square subways (and Macy's, H&M, etc), but far enough from traffic noise to be 'sleepable' at odd hours.  Also happens to be owned/managed by Indian-Americans.  And tell your friends to download my NYC Free and Frugal app on the iTunes store for ideas on cheap eats, free days at museums, stores where you never pay retail and lots of etc.  (http://bit.ly/klkfzO)

A tab below $200 is tricky, but I'd try the Excelsior on the Upper West Side and the Wales on the Upper East Side. Both charge more than $200 but perhaps they can do a deal. Both hotels are quiet, comfortable and pleasant. And both are close to buses and/or the subway. But both have caveats, as you'd expect in this range. Here's the Excelsior review from my Web site Overnight New York: http://www.overnightnewyork.com/review.aspx?hotel_id=32

And here's the Wales: http://www.overnightnewyork.com/review.aspx?hotel_id=59

The Beacon on the UWS, which is also quiet and near public transportation, may work as well: http://www.overnightnewyork.com/review.aspx?hotel_id=37

Btw, even if they get the tab down to $200, it's going to go up because of tax.

The Park Central. Great rates under $200 for the location.
Hi Ed! We can assist with a few really great options for hotel under $200! When are they arriving?? Please contact us at info@newyorkguest and we would be more than happy to assist!

Oh Boy  - This is always tough for New Yorkers :) I gather subway lines are the killer. How about Hotel 17 ?  I am sure someone could ferret out a deal between betterbidding.com and hotwire.com ?

Hi Ed, just sent you an email, but have you see this - http://www.jetsetter.com/r/king_luxe?nm=serp&cl=6&ca=title

If you can't access the link it's $179 for City Club Hotel.

Try Indigo Hotel, Chelsea (near meat district). I've stayed there last July. So happy with the room, it's clean, modern and new!

Hi there!

If you're looking for absolute comfort, privacy and luxury I recommend The Sherry-Netherland Hotel in New York!

As a lifelong New Yorker and a travel writer to boot, I could have booked the couple (friends of my brother) without posting this on Ask a Travel Pro. But I figured I might get some ideas that I hadn't thought of by posting here, and that sure turned out to be true. These are terrific answers -- so good, that I'm bookmarking this page for the next time someone asks me about quiet, affordable, midtown Manhattan hotels. Thank you all for reminding me of some places that had slipped below my radar.
Ed, try the new Yotel on Tenth Ave. and 42nd St. It's a new concept, very hip, a robot takes your luggage to your "pod" with foldaway bed, compact space, for $150 per night. For more "space" on this craft, you can get "cabins" for much more money. A fun place to stay. Marian Betancourt

try www.thejanenyc.com  $99 a night with a shared shower/bath situation. spotlessly clean, nice staff and west village location is very convenient.
